When talking about hearing loss, it is beneficial to know what to look out for, what may have caused it and how easy it can be to treat it.
There are a variety of symptoms, most of them very obvious to oneself and others. According to Healthy Hearing, the main symptoms include:
- Difficulty understanding everyday conversations
- A feeling of being able to hear but not understand
- Having to turn up the TV or radio
- Asking others to repeat often
- Avoidance of social situations that were once enjoyable
- A sense of exhaustion after a day of listening to other people
- Increased difficulty communicating in noisy situations like restaurants, lively family gatherings, in the car or in group meetings
- Tinnitus, or ringing and/or buzzing sounds in the ears
Most hearing loss cases are age-related. As we get older, it is one of the most common disabilities we experience. One out of four adults aged 65-74 and one out of two adults aged 75 and up, live with significantly impaired hearing. Another cause is frequent exposure to louder noises such as headphones, construction, or gunfire. Genetics, head trauma, and other illnesses can also lead to impaired hearing.
There are a lot of reasons why you should treat your hearing loss right away. Many studies have shown that people who do not seek treatment have a higher risk of depression, social isolation, and cognitive decline that can eventually lead to dementia. It is also extremely risky because it makes one more vulnerable to dangerous trips and falls.
Fortunately, we are at a point in science where this issue is very well understood and can often be treated. The most common treatment for hearing loss is hearing aids. Finding the right hearing health professional to share this journey with is imperative in order to achieve ultimate results. Hearing aids range in style, color, size, technology and price. At California Hearing Center, we try our best to find the perfect match for each patient. During our evaluation, we take many factors into consideration. First we look at the type of hearing loss the patient has, along with the cause and severity of it. Depending on the lifestyle, communication needs, cosmetic preferences and budget, we will work with the patient to find what works best for them in order to live a healthier, fuller life.
